Leopoldskron Castle in Salzburg
The historic Leopoldskron Castle is an architectural masterpiece of the Baroque period.

Built in 1736, Leopoldskron Castle was conceived as the family residence of the Firmian family. The splendour of the building reflects their deep attachment to art and culture. The stucco ceilings inside, designed by Johann Kleber, are among the most beautiful of their time and are exemplary of Baroque interior design. The castle was complemented by a large courtyard and extensive gardens. An imposing pond, framed by magnificent avenues of horse chestnut trees, emphasised the representative function of the estate and made Leopoldskron one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Salzburg.
Leopold Anton handed the castle over to his nephew Franz Laktanz von Firmian in 1744. He enriched the estate with a remarkable collection of paintings, including works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer and Titian. He also supported artists such as Leopold Mozart and his son Wolfgang Amadeus, making Leopoldskron Castle a centre of artistic creativity.
Leopoldskron Castle is one of the most important filming locations in "The Sound of Music", as the majestic ensemble with a view of the lake served as the main backdrop for all the terrace scenes on the lake of the Von Trapp household. These include scenes in which Maria and the children fall into the water, as well as the moment when the captain and Uncle Max drink pink lemonade on the terrace. Although the interior of the mansion was not mentioned in the film, the golden Venetian ballroom and the foyer were recreated in Hollywood for interior shots.
Today, Leopoldskron Castle is run by a boutique hotel, which means that access is restricted to the public. However, there is a photo spot at Leopoldskroner Weiher, from where Leopoldskron Castle and Hohensalzburg Fortress can be captured together in a picture. This spot is particularly suitable at sunrise or in the late evening hours. On windless days, buildings are reflected in the water, giving the motif a special touch. The best time to take photos at the pond (summer) is at sunrise, when the sun rises next to the castle and fortress and, with a little practice, a beautiful sun star can be captured.
You can reach Leopoldskron Castle at the HOP ON HOP OFF station 6 "Schloss Leopoldskron", yellow line.
